Executive Director
As the Executive Director of Camp Ocean Pines in Cambria, California, Chris Cameron has a passion for mentoring staff and inspiring a love for inquiry and a love for nature. With his extensive experience and wide perspective, Chris is helping Camp Ocean Pines to become a leading center for personal growth in students and adults alike.
Using wind-felled logs from the property and straw bale construction in the passive solar designed cabins, the site has become an educational experience. Under his leadership, Camp Ocean Pines is developing a reputation as a place of natural beauty and sustainable development!
Chris is a versatile leader and has been a pastor, a naturalist, a consultant to the CA Dept of Ed. He was born and raised in Redondo Beach, married his high school sweetheart, moved to Los Osos and raised three teenage boys. In his spare time, he loves building, gardening, raising chickens, and traveling. He has coached soccer, can drive a bus, keep bees, catch snakes, make a fire with two sticks and has a Master’s degree in Organizational Leadership.

Caryn Beiter
Outdoor Education Program Director
Caryn grew up in the deciduous foresets of Rochester, NY but has since lived no more than 10 minutes from the ocean. Her first outdoor education job was teaching amrine biology underwater in the Florida Keys. Caryn has since worked, lived, traveled and taught science around the country from California to Maine. In the midst of it all, Caryn worked at Camp Ocean Pines in 2005 teaching students, writing curriculum, building the basketball court and locksmithing doors! She loves to grow vegetables, search for nudibranchs in the tidepools and spot whales while running on Fiscalini Ranch. She holds a B.S. in Marine and Freshwater Biology from the University of New Hampshire.

This will be Doc’s fifth year at Camp Ocean Pines, and his tenth year being involved in various summer camps. He has worked for some amazing programs in the past, including running before and after school programs for the Valley of the Sun YMCA and running his own music education programs for the City of Phoenix’s recreation department. He loves sharing nature and music with kids and have fallen in love with the beautiful central coast of California where our little camp lives. He can’t wait to start some amazing new programs and to continue to give kids the best summers they have ever had!

Richard “Tongs” Lawson brings 25 years of kitchen experience to Camp Ocean Pines holding such titles in the past as Chef, Sous Chef, Kitchen Manager/Supervisor and Lead Line Cook. He began his career as a dishwasher at the local bowling alley coffee shop and worked his way through the ranks at many local San Luis Obispo establishments. His love and passion for cooking healthy and tasty meals is clearly reflected here at the camp. He prepares meals according to the group’s tastes and interests and also takes into consideration the special needs and diets of all whom come to camp.
Rick is a father of a grown son and a daughter who is a senior in high school. He has been an avid camper for over the past 30 years and his hobbies include hiking, biking, bowling, swimming, going to concerts, and of course, cooking. He has earned two A.A. degrees from Cuesta College and taken many classes at Cal Poly in the Agriculture Business Department. Some of his favorite foods to prepare are BBQ, Mexican, Mediterranean, Rustic California and Seafood Dishes. Richard is very excited to have this opportunity to be part of the Camp Ocean Pines team.
