Our forest is a mix of towering pines and windswept oaks. Students will discover the cycles of the forest as they peek under logs, listen to birds and dive below the grasses as they become predators in a game of camouflage.
Our Ocean is a mix of sandy beaches and rugged rocky shores. During our marine programs, students will get to know the ocean habitats as they search for seastars and crabs in the tidepools; learn that an entire world exists below the sand as they dig for mole crabs and get their hands sticky while making art out of algae!
We are tucked away on thirteen acres of Monterey Pine forest with a 180 degree view of the ocean. Although it feels like a distant, rustic retreat, we are conveniently situated halfway between Los Angeles and San Francisco and just three hours from Fresno and Bakersfield. Our unique location in a coastal forest provides for the most comprehensive environmental education experience.
Most of the buildings on our property were designed and constructed through wise resource use. We have ten beautifully designed straw bale cabins, engineered for passive solar efficiency. Each cabin has its own bathroom and unique nature, science or literature theme defined by hand-painted murals. We also have newly constructed apartments available for teachers. Most of the buildings on the property also contain siding and timbers milled from our own wind-felled trees. Our facility can house 100 guests.
Camp Ocean Pines is a non-profit organization located in the heart of California’s central coast. Camp Ocean Pines grew out of a YMCA program started here in 1946. The YMCA deeded the property to a local group of leaders who have resurrected the facilities and established Camp Ocean Pines. We currently provide outdoor education for school groups, host workshops, conferences and run and exciting summer camp.
