Ocean Pines provides creative programming to encourage personal, physical and spiritual growth. The beauty and tranquility of Ocean Pines helps inspire the expression of creative potential. Sample weekend retreats include sculpting, painting, quilting, storytelling, writers' workshops, massage, yoga and nature study.

Art and Poetry: How to Inspire Your Students

July 31-August 2, 2009

This workshop will teach you how to inspire your students by bringing visual art and poetry into your classroom. This class will help your students as they explore the connections between color and poetry through hands-on exploration of the foundations of mechanics of color, acrylic painting techniques, and the work of artists such as Matisse, Klee, and Miro.

Pebble Mosaic

July 31-August 2, 2009

 
Expand your creativity with contemporary mosaic artist Kevin Carman. This workshop will cover the steps involved to create a sight specific pebble mosaic including; selection of materials, scale, use of tools, techniques, and design elements. We will work together to make a pebble mosaic ring that surrounds and completes the marine sculpture exhibit.

Explorations in Sculpture with Found and Natural Materials  

July 31-August 2, 2009

With an emphasis on finding your own creative path, we will explore modes of cutting, shaping and joining a variety of materials.  In an atmosphere of playful discovery, participants will be guided through simple sculptural processes into their own creative territory.  No previous sculpting experience necessary.

David Turner has spent much of the last 25 years sculpting with found wood and stones.  He earned an MFA in Sculpture from Mills College in 1986, and has exhibited his work primarily in the San Francisco Bay Area where he lives and works.Cost

Aromatherapy

Instructor Gwynne Beatty will be leading 3 classes throughout the day, early morning, late morning, and early afternoon.

$35/person. Includes one bottle and all the oils. Additional bottles/oils can be purchased for $10.
 

Passiflora Green Mosaic Workshop

August 14-16, 2009

If you love mosaic art and are interested in how to incorporate interesting recycled and found objects into this art form, you won’t want to miss this workshop! Learn to artistically ‘bend the rules’ of traditional mosaics by using not only tile, glass and stone but also broken china, shells, pebbles, knick-knacks, jewelry, metal and more... as you mosaic a hand made concrete birdbath*, 16” x 19” wall panel, table lamp or terra cotta pot.


Cost

$250/person includes 2 nights lodging, 5 meals, expert instruction, use of tools and all materials.*($40 extra material fee charged for birdbath)

$195/person for offsite lodging. 


Tempera/Batik Painting on Paper

August 24-26, 2009

Tempera Batik is a process oriented style of painting that can bring truly wonderful and unexpected results! The vibrancy of color achieved by using tempera paint in conjunction with India ink is truly amazing. Students will learn how to create an interesting composition, working either from photographs or from real life. They will then experience the painting, inking, and rinsing techniques used to achieve the "batik" look of the style. Students will learn to examine their paintings and choose areas of interest to carefully repaint for depth, clarity, and detail.

The Instructor- Julie Dunn is an accomplished artist and art educator. Her career has spanned over 25 years. Julie loves sharing her specialized technique with others, offering demonstrations and hands-on workshops. She is a co-owner of "The Gallery at the Network", located in downtown San Luis Obispo, where her work is on permanent display. She also participates in local and regional art festivals and juried exhibitions, where she has won several awards for her work.

Chinese Brush Painting

August 24-28, 2009

Learn the ancient arts of Chinese Brush Painting, Calligraphy, and Japanese paper marbling with artist and teacher Joy Harvey. Joy has over 30 years experience to share with these limited enrollment classes. The week long workshop begins with lunch on Monday, classes Tues, Wed, Thurs, Fri a.m. and concludes with lunch on Friday. A materials list will be sent to registered participants, and specialized supplies will be available to purchase.
 

Cost
$345/person. Includes 4 nights lodging, use of the camp, 12 meals, lesson plans, hands-on teaching, and constructive critique.
