Nature Journaling I & II

  • 1473 Randall Dr. Cambria, CA 93428 USA (map)

Deepen your experience of the natural world through close looking and reflection with artist Michelle Antonisse. We will learn the history of field journaling (recorded observations of nature) and experiment with our own practice. Through close looking, sketching exercises, writing prompts, line work, color theory, concept mapping and deep listening, we will drop into the present moment and explore our relationship to and knowledge of plants, animals, fungus and lichens.

This is a perfect opportunity for park docents honing communication skills, scientists looking to expand their storytelling practice, teachers experimenting with pedagogies and artists leaning into their relationship with natural spaces. Do not worry if you don’t fall into a previous category - this workshop is truly for anyone who wants a relaxing weekend of therapeutic deep-looking, drawing and experience with the natural world!

There will be a few informational lectures, sketching lessons, group activities, a field trip to observe the Elephant Seals at San Simeon, evening fireside hangs, and of course solo time journaling in nature. Onsite lodgers will stay in cozy group cabins, each with a shower, nestled in an ancient Monterey Pine grove. You will wake up to see families of deer tiptoeing through dappled sunlight and hear sea lions barking over softly crashing waves.

On-site lodging - $573 plan includes lodging for 3 nights, 8 meals and all instruction

Off-site lodging - $499 plan includes 8 meals, all instruction however, no lodging

A non-refundable deposit of $150 is non-refundable is required at the time of registration and the balance is due 30 days prior to the workshop.

Michelle Antonisse teaches at MOCA (Museum of Contemporary Art), Angels Gate Cultural Center and the Norton Simon Museum. She is also a certified California Naturalist and Artist in Residence at Camp Ocean Pines. Her own art deals with the human relationship to “nature”, the process of creating narratives and ways of understanding nonhuman stories through a human lens.
