Why Kids Need Camp: A Director’s Perspective

Since 2013, I've dedicated my summers to working at various summer camps. Each year, as I immerse myself in this unique environment, I find myself drawn back by the unparalleled experiences it offers. There's something truly special about camp—it is a space unlike any other. It's distinct from the structured confines of school, the competitive atmosphere of sports, or the virtual realm of social media. At camp, the primary focus is on fostering connections, nurturing relationships, and facilitating skill development, all while children gain independence and explore the natural world. Here's why I firmly believe that kids need camp today, perhaps more than ever before.

Building Social and Emotional Skills: Camp provides a crucial platform for children to develop essential social and emotional skills while forging connections with their peers. Especially in the wake of the pandemic, where many in-person social interactions were limited, camp plays a vital role in rebuilding these skills that may have been lost during extended periods away from school and isolation from their peers.

A Break from Electronics and Social Media: Unlike the constant digital stimulation of today's world, camp offers a much-needed respite from electronics and social media. By prohibiting phones and other devices, we create an environment free from the pressures of unhealthy social comparisons and cyber-bullying. Instead, children engage in meaningful face-to-face interactions, fostering genuine friendships and embracing diversity.

Exploring New Activities: With a plethora of activities to choose from, camp encourages children to step out of their comfort zones and explore new interests. Whether it's trying something they've never done before or discovering a lifelong passion-such as playing guitar, kayaking, or yoga-camp empowers children to make decisions, advocate for themselves, and embrace new experiences.

The Joy of Fun and Play: Above all, camp is about having fun. It's a place where children can play, laugh, sing, dance, and learn without the pressures of academia or social expectations weighing them down. Amidst the stresses of daily life, both in school and beyond, children deserve a space where they can simply be kids.

These are all what I have learned and experienced working at Camp, they are also supported by data. The National Camp Impact Study found that
“Summer camp is a beneficial part of child and youth development and complements other life experiences ” and “high quality camp experiences youth and young adult outcomes” which include, “affinity for nature, independence, and social awareness” (Acacamps.org). At Camp Ocean Pines, 96.4% of the families shared that their camper made a new friend, 92% enjoyed living in an outdoor setting, and 84% of campers felt that they could be their true selves. Every season, our staff works hard to ensure that campers have incredible camp experiences that are impactful and encourage growth.

At Camp Ocean Pines, we strive to create precisely that kind of environment—a place where children can thrive, grow, and create lasting memories. As a counselor, I've witnessed firsthand the transformative power of camp in shaping young minds and hearts. Now, more than ever, I believe in the importance of providing children with the opportunity to experience the magic of camp, to connect with nature, build meaningful relationships, and discover their true selves. So, whether it's their first time away from home or they're returning for another unforgettable summer, I invite you to consider Camp Ocean Pines as that special place for your child—a place where lifelong friendships are forged, skills are honed, and memories are made that will last a lifetime.
